Founded in 1981 by Ethiopian refugees, the African Services Committee is a Harlem-based multi-service agency committed to assisting immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers of the African Diaspora. With a staff representing more than 12 countries, the organization provides legal support, health services-- including TB screening, counseling, and HIV/AIDS case management-- employment services, food, and housing.
When ASC's services grew dramatically, their office space was no longer adequate for their programs. In 2006, ASC decided to add an additional floor to their office, increasing usable space by 1600 square feet. A $245,000 loan from Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) covered part of the total $530,000 envisaged for the project. With this expansion, ASC could serve more clients, provide more teaching and counseling space, and alleviate staff overcrowding.
NFF works to create a strong, well-capitalized and durable nonprofit sector that connects money to mission effectively, supporting the highest aspirations and most generous impulses of people and communities.
